Approximately $2.2 billion is being invested to develop two dedicated trucking facilities in Region Six to address environmental concerns, improve community infrastructure and support the orderly expansion of economic activities.

    Trucking facility at Smithson’s Place

The facilities are currently being constructed at Smithson’s Place, commonly referred to as Palmyra, and Number 75 Village along the Corentyne Coast.

The initiative follows a policy directive issued by President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali during a cabinet meeting in Region Six, after concerns were raised during community consultations and visits across the country.

There, the residents spoke about heavy-duty vehicles parked along road shoulders and narrow residential streets, as well as the improper disposal of oil and other waste from vehicle servicing.

At Smithson’s Place, the 30-acre facility is approximately 65 per cent complete, while the 10.6-acre Number 75 Village facility is nearing completion, with three of its four lots practically completed.

Minister of Housing Collin Croal engages CHPA engineers and contractors at the Number 75 trucking facility

During a site visit on Wednesday, Minister of Housing Collin Croal explained that the facilities will provide truck owners and operators with designated spaces to park, service and repair their vehicles, reducing strain on existing community infrastructure.

The facilities will be equipped with fencing, lighting and security, alongside an operational management team. Users will be required to pay a minimal fee to cover the cost of maintaining and operating the facilities.
