A new 20-team football tournament was officially launched on Sunday at the Everest Cricket Club Ground in Georgetown, creating expanded opportunities for players from across Guyana to display their talent on a competitive stage.
The initiative represents a major step in creating more platforms for athletes, particularly those from hinterland communities, to compete and gain exposure.
Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Steven Jacobs, who was present for the opening match, explained that it will provide an opportunity to identify exceptional talent across Guyana.

Teams vying for the title include Campbelltown BK Raiders and Westside Alliance.
Minister Jacobs said Guyana continues to produce talented athletes, including in indigenous communities.
“We are giving opportunities to every single sportsman and sportswoman across the entire country,” Minister Jacobs said.

The minister also recognised the role of companies supporting sports through their corporate social responsibility programmes, describing the partnership as an important contribution to national development.
The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to expand sporting opportunities and strengthen the development of athletes at all levels.
