Georgetown, Guyana — President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali has reaffirmed the Government of Guyana’s commitment to supporting international cricket tournaments as the country officially opened the second edition of the International Masters Cricket Over-40s World Cup.
Addressing players, officials and supporters at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence on Friday evening, President Ali welcomed the 15 participating teams and highlighted the role of sports in strengthening international relationships, promoting cultural exchange and bringing communities together.
He also pledged the Government’s support for efforts to host next year’s Over-40s T20 World Cup in Guyana.
Sports Can Strengthen International Relationships
President Ali said sporting events provide opportunities to build friendships, connect cultures and bring people from different backgrounds together.
He encouraged participating players to approach the tournament with passion, pride and sportsmanship while making the most of the opportunity to connect with fellow cricketers, professionals and businesspeople from other countries.
The President also commended the athletes for their continued dedication to cricket, noting that many former international and national players have invested significant time and personal resources to remain competitive.
He said sports can help people remain focused, mentally strong and serve as positive examples for their families, communities and countries.
Government Supports Future International Tournaments
President Ali assured tournament organisers that the Government would work to support their efforts to bring the Over-40s T20 World Cup to Guyana next year.
He encouraged the organisers to maintain close coordination with the relevant authorities to ensure visiting teams and officials have a comfortable and successful experience.
The President also invited players and their families to explore Guyana’s culture, hospitality and attractions, expressing hope that they would return for future visits.
The Government’s support reflects Guyana’s ongoing efforts to attract major international sporting events and strengthen the country’s profile as a destination for sports tourism.
Fifteen Teams Compete in Masters Cricket World Cup
The second edition of the International Masters Cricket Over-40s World Cup features 15 teams, including defending champions South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, England, the United Arab Emirates and the West Indies.
Matches are scheduled to begin on Saturday at cricket venues across Guyana.
The West Indies team, captained by former international wicketkeeper-batter Denesh Ramdin, is set to face Australia at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence from 9:30 a.m.
The regional team also includes former West Indies players Ramnaresh Sarwan, Jason Mohammed, Narsingh Deonarine and Devendra Bishoo.
The competition provides experienced cricketers with an opportunity to represent their countries while continuing to compete at an international level.
Guyana Expands Its Sporting Profile
Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steven Jacobs credited President Ali’s focus on sports development and infrastructure with helping Guyana attract international sporting events.
He pointed to the country’s expanding sporting calendar, including the Global Super League, as evidence of its growing role in international sports.
Jacobs welcomed the participating teams and said the tournament would give former players an opportunity to compete while building connections beyond the cricket field.
He encouraged all teams to demonstrate sportsmanship and wished the participants a successful competition.
Cricket Tournament Expected to Boost Sports Tourism
The Masters World Cup is expected to bring players, officials and supporters from several countries to Guyana, creating opportunities for cultural exchange and tourism-related activity.
By supporting international cricket and investing in sporting infrastructure, Guyana is seeking to attract more competitions and visitors while expanding its presence on the international sporting stage.
The tournament also highlights the continuing contribution of veteran cricketers, demonstrating that age does not have to prevent athletes from participating in competitive sport.
