Residents of Powaikuru Village in Region One are experiencing significant improvements in transportation, education and community infrastructure, as government investments continue to enhance life in hinterland communities.

Village leader Aaron Gomes, during a recent interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI), highlighted several major developments that have positively impacted the community.

Gomes explained that one of the most important interventions was government assistance to improve the village’s creek access, which had previously posed serious challenges for residents transporting goods and produce.

According to the village leader, the upgraded creek now allows easier and more efficient movement for farmers and residents travelling to nearby markets and communities.

He noted that the community has also benefited from equipment and transportation support through the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) programme, including the acquisition of vehicles, tractors, motorbikes, engines and a 200-horsepower outboard engine.

The investments, he said, have strengthened transportation within the community and improved residents’ ability to conduct economic activities and access services.

Gomes further revealed that Powaikuru is on the verge of receiving a brand-new school, which is currently under construction and nearing completion.

The new educational facility, being developed through support from the education sector, is expected to provide improved learning conditions for children in the community and strengthen access to quality education in the hinterland region.

Speaking on the developments taking shape in the region, the village leader expressed gratitude to the government for its continued focus on hinterland development.

He said residents are pleased with the progress and are optimistic about the opportunities these investments will create for the community’s future growth and wellbeing.

The developments form part of broader government efforts to improve infrastructure, transportation, education and public services in remote and riverain communities across Guyana.
