More traffic enforcement cameras are expected to become operational before the end of the year as the Guyana Police Force continues to expand the use of technology to strengthen traffic enforcement and road safety.
According to Traffic Chief, Assistant Commissioner of Police Mahendra Singh, the expansion is progressing well, with an additional 48 lanes expected to come on stream after the necessary road traffic engineering works have been completed.
The Safe Road Intelligence System (SRIS), which was fully rolled out on April 7, 2025, is currently operational across 112 lanes in Regions Three and Four.
Singh explained that the additional camera locations have already undergone the required road traffic engineering works, paving the way for the systems to be operationalised.
The Traffic Chief noted that the technology will allow the police to monitor traffic offences across wider stretches of roadway.
It would reduce the need for officers to be physically stationed along the road to detect offences such as speeding.
“Those cameras when operationalised will lend to a greater effect in terms of deterring the commission” of traffic offences, Singh said, adding that the technology is also expected to influence drivers’ behaviour.
Meanwhile, pointing to evidence base, the Traffic Chief noted that the system also provides a reliable evidence trail for offences detected by the cameras, with the evidence captured and extracted through established procedures.
“If it is contested, the evidence is there to be produced because it’s not something that we can just come up with. We can’t reproduce this evidence. It is captured,” Singh explained.
He said the use of technology is expected to strengthen enforcement as the system expands, while also allowing the police to respond more effectively to traffic violations across the road network.
Singh emphasised that the expansion reflects efforts to modernise traffic management and improve road safety, particularly through greater use of technology to deter speeding and other traffic offences.
