–no vacancy exists for prisons’ service leadership
The government says that former Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels continues to play an important role in Guyana’s security architecture, with responsibility for advising on security matters and providing oversight related to the prison system.
Minister of Home Affairs, Hon Oneidge Walrond, MP, made the disclosure today as the National Assembly met at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre at Liliendaal. Minister Walrond responded to questions regarding Samuels’ current assignment.

According to the minister, Samuels is presently engaged as an advisor to the president on security matters, a portfolio that includes oversight of the prison system.
The position allows him to continue contributing his extensive experience in corrections and national security at a strategic level.
The minister also addressed questions regarding the appointment of prison service leadership, assuring the House that there is currently no vacancy in the substantive leadership of the Guyana Prison Service.

“There is currently no vacancy for the substantive leadership of the prison service. But when and if that occurs, we will be sure to appoint in keeping with the provisions of the Prison Act,” Minister Walrond stated.
Her response signalled the government’s commitment to ensuring that any future appointments are made in accordance with the legal framework governing the prison system.
