Guyana’s economy continues to expand rapidly, supported by strong oil and non-oil activity, prudent economic policies and sustained public investment, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
These findings were disclosed through the IMF’s recent Article IV Consultation report, which indicated that Guyana’s real gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 19.3 per cent in 2025, following average growth of nearly 40 per cent during 2023 and 2024.
The report highlighted that strong oil revenues helped narrow the overall fiscal deficit to 5.5 per cent of GDP in 2025, while significant public investments continued.
Added to this, Guyana’s position among the countries with the lowest debt-to-GDP ratios in the Western Hemisphere was also recognised, reflecting the country’s strong economic fundamentals.
The IMF noted that investments in physical and human capital are supporting non-oil economic growth and improving social outcomes. Meanwhile, the accumulation of oil revenues in the Natural Resource Fund (NRF) is helping to strengthen the country’s financial buffers and support long-term fiscal sustainability.
Growth across the non-oil economy remained robust in 2025, led by construction and supported by agriculture, mining and manufacturing. The report also noted improvements in labour market conditions, alongside strong private sector credit growth, which continued to support economic activity.
As such, the report highlighted that Guyana’s economic outlook remains highly favourable, with non-oil growth projected to average approximately seven per cent over the medium term.
Further, continued expansion in oil production, alongside activity in other sectors, is expected to support further growth.
The IMF pointed to the importance of maintaining fiscal responsibility, strengthening economic resilience and advancing diversification to sustain growth.
It noted that continued investments in infrastructure, human capital and climate resilience, alongside efforts to expand employment opportunities and strengthen food security, will be important to ensuring sustainable and inclusive development.
