Vendors in Buxton who were displaced to facilitate the $192 million East Coast Demerara road construction project have been relocated to a newly constructed tarmac along the corridor.
The handover of the facility and the transparent lottery selection process for business spots were overseen by Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill on Tuesday.
The newly constructed asphalt tarmac can accommodate up to 61 vendors.
During the exercise, Minister Edghill emphasised the importance of maintaining the facility and preserving its aesthetic appeal.
He encouraged vendors to work together to ensure the new tarmac maintains a modern and uniform appearance.
The minister also cautioned against haphazard structures, noting that a clean and standardised layout will enhance the community’s image, attract more customers, and improve the overall shopping experience.
Recognising the operational needs, the minister assured that within two weeks, all lighting fixtures and washroom facilities will be installed and fully functional.
Similarly, the government is moving to establish vending plazas in every Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) countrywide.
The proposed plazas will feature food courts and adequate facilities for vendors, creating spaces that are tourist-friendly, clean, safe, and enjoyable.
