Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Hon Priya Manickchand, MP, on Friday assured the National Assembly that all legal obligations falling under her ministry will be complied with, as she responded to questions regarding reports of the Local Government Commission.

Minister Manickchand noted that she only assumed responsibility for the ministry in 2025 and suggested that questions about the failure to table reports in previous years should be directed to those who held the office during the period under question.
“The honourable member should best be able to answer for why, in 2018, 2019, 2020, even the time that they stayed in office after the people asked them to leave, why the report was not laid in this House? What I can assure you sir, is that any law that mandates the Local Government Ministry to do or not do something, will be complied under my leadership…” she said.

The tenure of the Commission expired on April 12, 2024.
It was responsible for the employment, discipline, promotions, and disputes for staff across municipalities and local democratic organs.
