The government is focusing on the next six months to stabilise Guyana’s electricity supply.
President Dr Irfaan Mohamed Ali said the plan includes overhauling generating sets, adding new capacity at critical points on the grid, and completing a major transmission link.
In an interview on the energy sector streamed on Friday, the president said a technical assessment has been completed for the maintenance overhaul of about 25 to 27 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity.
The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) is also looking to bring 4.5 MW into the grid at critical areas.
“So, the next six months is critical for the existing challenge,” President Ali said.
He explained that some generating capacity will have to be taken out of the system within the next three months for scheduled overhaul and maintenance.
The government is working to identify the additional power that will be needed through to the end of the year.
The interconnection between the Berbice and Demerara grids, now under construction, is expected to be completed in a couple of months.
The president said it will bring a lot of ease to the system, acknowledging the frustration of citizens affected by power outages.
“I would say I am frustrated myself, but we are in a seat where we have to find the solutions… We’re going to make all the investment necessary,” he said.
The president attributed the challenges to generation shortfalls, limited reserve capacity, and ageing transmission and distribution networks.
The country’s rapid infrastructure works; housing expansion and industrial growth have added pressure to the system.
GPL estimates that upgrading its transmission and distribution network will require close to US$800 million over five years.
The government is in discussions with several agencies, including partners in Qatar, to expedite that investment.
Work is also underway to strengthen GPL’s management and technical capacity, guided by recommendations from its consultant and support from development partners.
Looking ahead, the president said independent analysis projects demand for power will grow by close to 140 per cent, and possibly up to 300 per cent in the medium term.
The government is exploring incentives to help households reduce costs and generate their own renewable power. These could include solar rebate and grid-tie programmes, which would also support Guyana’s renewable energy targets.
