The government on Monday reiterated its seriousness and commitment to protecting the nation’s senior citizens and ensuring they enjoy their later years in safety, dignity and comfort.

During the World Elders Abuse Awareness Day 2026 event at the Police Officers’ Mess Annex in Eve Leary, Georgetown, Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr Vindhya Persaud, highlighted the need to confront elder abuse.

He noted that many cases often go unreported and are frequently perpetrated by relatives and other trusted individuals.

She explained that too many elderly persons continue to experience economic and financial abuse. This occurs when someone controls, exploits, or limits a person’s ability to acquire, use, and maintain financial resources.

Dr Persaud stated that these are issues that are “very much on our front burner. And every day, we have teams from the ministry who work to share information and education as we strive to curb it.”

Dr Persaud also encouraged the senior folk to exercise caution when dealing with property matters and legal documents.

As part of the government’s broader efforts to improve the well-being of the elderly, the minister outlined plans to expand community-based programmes that promote social engagement, digital literacy and active ageing.

She said the ministry’s Golden Generation initiatives and community hubs are designed to ensure seniors remain connected, engaged and empowered.

“We want you to engage socially. We want to train you in digital literacy. We also want you to share your talent, your skills and your knowledge,” Minister Persaud said.
