The newly commissioned Brian Sucre Junction Health Post in Region Eight has already treated more than 100 patients within its first week of operation.

The health facility, commissioned last Friday by Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development Pauline Sukhai and Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steven Jacobs, was established to provide easier access to healthcare services for residents who previously had to travel to Mahdia for treatment.

Regional Executive Officer (REO) Marti DeSouza made the disclosure during an interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI) on Sunday, highlighting the facility’s immediate impact on residents and miners in the area.

According to the REO, residents previously had to travel approximately one hour to Mahdia to access healthcare services, often incurring transportation costs ranging from $60,000 to $80,000.

To support healthcare delivery, an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) was also handed over to the facility.

Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Pauline Sukhai, hands over the ATV

“The vehicle will play a vital role in supporting referrals, outreach services and the movement of healthcare personnel, ensuring that residents can access timely medical care when needed,” REO DeSouza noted.

Constructed at a cost of more than $13 million, the health post currently serves several communities and mining areas in the vicinity. It is staffed by community health workers, with plans to expand healthcare services as the facility continues to develop.

The REO also highlighted the ongoing construction of the $5.4 billion Kato Regional Hospital, which is expected to significantly strengthen healthcare delivery across Region Eight by providing advanced medical services closer to residents.
