Amerindian Heritage Month 2026 was officially opened on Tuesday evening with a vibrant display of Indigenous culture, featuring traditional dances, music and colourful attire at the Sophia Exhibition Complex.

This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme, ‘Observing Our Cultural Heritage During Our Diamond Jubilee: Honouring Our Traditions, Culture and Contributions.’

Minister of Amerindian Affairs Sarah Brown-Shadeek delivering her presentation to the thousands that gathered at Sophia Exhibition Site to celebrate Amerindian Heritage Month on Tuesday

The theme reflects on the rich cultural heritage and significant contributions of Guyana’s Indigenous peoples while commemorating the country’s 60th Independence anniversary.

Delivering remarks at the opening ceremony, Minister of Amerindian Affairs Sarah Brown-Shadeek said the observance provides an opportunity for Guyanese to celebrate Indigenous traditions while recognising the important role Amerindians continue to play in shaping the country’s national identity.

“Cultural heritage is our identity, and we must have pride in it,” Minister Brown-Shadeek emphasised.

She noted that Amerindian Heritage Month is not merely a period of festivities but also represents a call to action for all Guyanese to support the preservation and promotion of Indigenous culture.

The minister urged citizens to participate in the various activities planned throughout September and to take the opportunity to learn more about the traditions, ancestral knowledge, and way of life of Guyana’s First Peoples.

“We must continue to support and invest in the preservation of Indigenous culture and heritage,” she stated.

Minister Brown-Shadeek also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of Indigenous communities while preserving their rich cultural traditions.

She pointed out that the government continues to invest in education, social welfare, infrastructure and economic opportunities across hinterland communities as part of its wider One Guyana development agenda.

The minister highlighted the importance of unity and community, particularly during difficult times, noting that Heritage Month serves as a reminder of the need for Guyanese to come together in reflection and solidarity.

In attendance for the opening night celebrations were, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, government ministers, members of the diplomatic corps and other officials joined citizens for the opening ceremony, which marked the beginning of a month of activities celebrating Guyana’s First Peoples.

Amerindian Heritage Month is celebrated annually throughout September, with activities being held across Guyana to promote greater recognition, appreciation and respect for the culture and contributions of the country’s First Peoples.
