The new partnership between the University of Guyana and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is set to strengthen Guyana’s pool of skilled workforce needed to support its rapid development.

Addressing a gathering at the University of Guyana on Monday, Minister Parag said the introduction of the enhanced accountancy programme, which is expected to begin in September, represents a significant step for the country.

She emphasised that the partnership will provide students with a stronger pathway through a double award qualification with ACCA, giving graduates enhanced skills and international recognition.

“Any country that is transforming at the pace that we are transforming, you also have to have the qualifications to match that. You also have to have education, which is the core of any national development, moving at a pace as your transformation is,” Minister Parag said.

Minister of Education, Sonia Parag addresses the gathering at the University of Guyana on Monday

The minister described the initiative as “a big deal for Guyana and the Caribbean”, noting that the programme will ensure future professionals are better prepared to contribute to both the public and private sectors.

Meanwhile, Minister Parag also highlighted the growing demand for tertiary education following the introduction of free university education, noting that the University of Guyana has been working to expand opportunities in key areas, including medicine and engineering.

She said the continued strengthening of tertiary education remains critical as Guyana positions itself for long-term growth.
