The upgrades to the Matthews Ridge Airstrip in Region One is now complete, delivering improved air connectivity and greater access to emergency and medevac services for residents of the community and surrounding areas.
The project has transformed the facility with a 4,200-foot reinforced concrete runway capable of accommodating larger aircraft, including Beechcraft-type planes.

The upgraded airstrip also features a parking apron, taxiways, international-standard runway markings and visual aid lighting to facilitate night-time emergency operations.
The improvements are expected to significantly strengthen connectivity to Matthews Ridge.
It will support faster emergency response, medevac operations and the movement of people and goods into and out of the community.
Beyond improved transportation access, the upgraded facility is also expected to support greater economic activity by creating an enhanced platform for increased movement and investment in the Region One community.

The project was delivered by the Ministry of Public Works’ Special Projects Unit under the Community Participation Model, which also ensured that residents benefited directly from the construction works.
Some 60 residents of Matthews Ridge were employed during the project, alongside 15 skilled workers from Mabaruma.
The completion of the airstrip represents another investment in hinterland infrastructure, strengthening the link between Matthews Ridge and the wider country while improving access to essential services and creating opportunities for greater economic activity.
With the upgraded runway and supporting infrastructure now in place, Matthews Ridge is better positioned to accommodate larger aircraft and respond to the transportation, emergency and economic needs of the communities.
