Boxing in Guyana is increasingly taking centre stage as a new generation of young fighters continues to make its mark in the Caribbean.
Just recently, these boxers dominated the Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Boxing Championships held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The event saw Guyana finish at the top of the medal table with eight gold and two silver medals, totaling 18 points.
On an individual level, Guyana also dominated, with its fighters claiming all three best boxer honours.
The performance by the young boxers highlighted the depth of talent emerging from the country’s boxing programme.
Adding to the success, the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) was hailed for staging the championships that brought together young boxers from several Caribbean countries.
GBA President Steve Ninvalle said he is pleased with the overall outcome despite the challenges involved in preparing for and hosting the championships.
He noted that regional associations continue to support the initiative and sent their young fighters to compete in Guyana.
Moreover, St Lucia placed second with two gold and two silver medals for six points, while Trinidad and Tobago collected three silver medals for three points.
St Maarten secured two silver medals for two points, with The Bahamas earning one silver medal for one point.
The tournament also provided emerging boxers with valuable competitive exposure and allowed the GBA to assess the progress of these developing talents.
The government, through the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, has continued investment in the sports sector. It has significantly contributed to these opportunities provided to youth athletes across Guyana.
Another example of this is female inmates at the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) stepping into the boxing ring for the first time and dominating.
Their participation forms part of the government’s efforts to use sport as a tool for rehabilitation, personal development and reducing recidivism.
