Works to commence at Soesdyke Junction to advance the Good Success to Timehri, Linden to Soesdyke projects

Bridges in the alignment of the Soesdyke Junction is slated to be dismantled within two weeks to advance works on two transformational projects which are the Good Success to Timehri Road expansion and the Linden-Soesdyke Highway upgrade.

These projects will intersect at the Soesdyke Junction as a roundabout.

Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill and engineering team explaining the boundary point and scope of the Soesdyke Junction roundabout construction

Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill on Wednesday met with stakeholders to discuss the relocation of occupants and other measures required to facilitate the construction of the roundabout to advance the two major projects.

“We want to be able to set clear timelines. We want to be able to get this project going,” Minister Edghill told stakeholders.

Drainage improvements will also form part of the development, including the excavation and shaping of drains before they are lined with geocell material.

Surveyors will also visit to identify and mark the legal boundaries of properties.

Resident raising concern on the project

Prior to this engagement, several discussions were held with people occupying the government reserves and affected residents were aware from the project’s launch that relocation would be required.

The public works minister highlighted the financial implications of delays in providing contractors with access to work sites.

Under government contracts, contractors can face liquidated damages when they fail to complete works within agreed timelines.

However, if delays are caused by the government failing to provide access, contractors may instead submit claims for additional costs.

“So, when we need to get these things done, we need to get it done expeditiously, and in a fair manner,” he explained.

Additionally, the minister suggested that taxi operators in the area that have to be relocated can collaborate with the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) to find a suitable space to continue their trade.

After which, the contractor will assist in constructing a tarmac so they can operate.

Meanwhile, the two major road projects are expected to significantly improve connectivity along the East Bank Demerara and Soesdyke-Linden corridors.
