‘We already started to invest in 26,175 new lots in Region Three’ – Pres Ali

Over 26,175 new house lots are under development in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) to meet the increasing demand and clear the housing backlog there by 2027.

Since January 2026, a total of 329 house lots have already been distributed, bringing the revised housing backlog down to 10,819. Another 526 lots are available for distribution.

This is according to President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, who provided an update on the housing development during a live video on Facebook recently.

“We have already started to put investment for development of 26,175 new lots in Region Three,” President Ali stated.

Dr Ali explained, however, that the region’s housing programme will also play a critical role in easing pressure on neighbouring Region Four, where demand for house lots remains the highest in the country.

A number of applicants from Region Four, where there is an enormous demand, will be transferred to Region Three.

“While this seems an adequate number to clear the Region Three backlog, we will have to also invest more in Region Three, where there is land available to help to clear the Region Four backlog,” the head of state explained. “We are hoping that by the end of 2027, we will be able to clear that backlog 100 per cent.”

More than $32 billion has been invested over the past five years to establish new housing infrastructure, resulting in the opening of new housing areas and the allocation of approximately 11,000 house lots.

Major developments are underway at Wales, Leonora, Groenveldt, Stewartville, Meten-Meer-Zorg, Anna Catherina and De Kinderen as the government continues expanding access to affordable homeownership.

Housing construction is also advancing across the region. At the Leonora/Groenveldt Housing Scheme, three-bedroom concrete homes are advancing, while a recently launched Foundation Programme is helping allottees begin constructing homes on their newly allocated lots.
