The annual Upper Mazaruni District Games have officially commenced in the village of Jawalla, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), bringing together athletes from across the district in a celebration of sport, culture and community.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jr and Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Sarah Browne-Shadeek are attending the event, which has attracted participants from 15 villages.

Over the next 10 days, athletes will compete in a range of disciplines, including football, volleyball, athletics, swimming, archery and several traditional sporting events.

The games are designed to promote healthy competition and strengthen bonds among Upper Mazaruni communities, providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents while preserving traditional sporting practices.

In support of that vision, Minister Browne-Shadeek and Minister Ramson presented a cheque valued at $3 million to the Upper Mazaruni District Sports Council.

The contribution aims to strengthen the district games, creating more opportunities for young people to grow through teamwork, discipline, and competition while celebrating the unity and spirit of the Upper Mazaruni communities.

Nearly $1 billion has been allocated to upgrade community grounds nationwide, with improvements including enhanced lighting, pavilions and bleachers to support year-round sporting activities.

Further support has also been provided through an additional $1 million grant to every Amerindian village to improve sporting facilities based on local priorities during the recently concluded National Toshao Council (NTC) Conference 2026.

The government is also constructing multipurpose sports halls in Regions One, Seven, Eight and Nine, creating modern venues capable of hosting basketball, volleyball, futsal, cricket and community events, while generating economic opportunities within hinterland communities.
