Technology is changing the way healthcare is delivered across Guyana’s hinterland regions, with telemedicine now available at 135 locations, connecting community health workers with doctors at hospitals and other health facilities across the country.

The initiative is strengthening healthcare delivery in remote communities by giving frontline workers access to medical expertise that may otherwise be many miles away.

In an interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI), Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony said the system was introduced to strengthen the diagnostic capabilities of community health workers and improve the level of care available at the community level.

“We wanted to give them a tool that can improve their diagnostic capabilities. So, in a hundred and thirty-five different locations now across the interior we have telemedicine,” he stated.

Through the system, community health workers can consult with doctors remotely when assessing patients, while diagnostic tools such as ECG and ultrasound equipment can allow doctors to review images in real time.

This is helping to improve diagnosis, guide treatment decisions and determine when patients require specialised care or medical evacuation, while allowing others to be treated safely within their own communities.

“The technology has already made a significant difference and improved the quality of care that we can offer in the communities,” Dr Anthony said.

The ministry is also expanding its use of technology beyond virtual consultations, with two drones currently being piloted to transport small quantities of medical supplies over distances of up to approximately 150 kilometres.

The drones could prove particularly valuable during emergencies, with the potential to deliver supplies such as blood or antivenom to remote communities where these items may not be routinely stored.

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader effort to overcome geographic barriers to healthcare, ensuring that residents in hinterland and remote communities can access timely medical advice, diagnostics and critical supplies.
