Residents of Soesdyke and Timehri are soon to have access to essential services as the Digital Identity Card Registry (DICR) takes its registration drive directly into communities.

Eligible citizens in the area were invited to register for their Digital Identity Card (e-ID) at the Prime Minister’s Sub-Office on Madewini Public Road on Saturday, giving residents an opportunity to complete the process closer to home.

For many, the initiative represents more than simply obtaining another form of identification. The e-ID is designed to make everyday interactions with government and private-sector services more secure, convenient and efficient.

The card provides a secure means of verifying a person’s identity both online and in person, while its biometric security features, including a photograph and fingerprints, help strengthen identity verification.

For residents like Vishnu Persaud, the convenience of having registration services brought into the community is an important part of the initiative.

“One of the great benefits of this e-ID is that you get to use it at the bank to get the loan, so that is a big step because you know you would have to get the documents. I’m grateful,” he said.

The DICR says the registration process requires eligible applicants to present the prescribed original supporting documents, after which their personal and biometric information is captured.

Citizens are subsequently notified when their cards are ready for collection.

    Alana Jones

Another resident, Alana Jones, said the move towards digital identification is a positive step as Guyana continues to modernise the way citizens interact with services.

“Coming here and learning about the e-ID, I see Guyana going forward in a great direction for the future with less running around to get things together, and we Guyanese, we don’t like better fun,” she noted.

The introduction of the e-ID forms part of the government’s wider push to modernise public service delivery and build a more digitally connected society.

As Guyana advances its digital transformation, the e-ID is ultimately about putting convenience, security and easier access to services into the hands of all its citizens.
