Several new hospitals are currently under construction in various part sof the country and is expected to raise the standard of healthcare services provided in the hinterland and other parts of Guyana.

Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that the 120-bed West Demerara Hospital will be completed at the end of next year.

This new hospital will have at least four operating theaters, a modern accident and emergency department, a new imaging suite which will do X Rays CT-scans and MRI’s among other modern amenities.

“We have a Cath Lab that we are putting in. We use Cath Labs to be able to do Cardiac Operations, so we will be putting that in the new hospitals so that when that new hospital opens, they will be bale to get Cardiac services there, meaning that somebody in that region they don’t necessarily have to come to Georgetown to get a stent, they will be able to get those services in Region Three,” the health minister said.

A new 50 bed hospital is being built at Kato which will complement the Mahdia hospital.

Region one, will also benefit from a modern hospital at Moruca.

“That is going to be a 50-bed hospital. It will have all these facilities that we have been talking about, imaging, accident and emergency, good wards, specialized services, two operating Theatres so a lot of things that we currently cannot do in Region One. We will now be able to do with a new hospital,” he said.

The people of Region Nine will also benefit from a larger hospital at Lethem and the ministry has already started decanting a specialist team so that the services will be readily available there.

“We have a bigger hospital that we are putting in Lethem, and that’s because we see more people coming to us for services in Lethem. Currently for Surgical services, we have seen persons coming in from Brazil coming across to get services. So with the new hospital, we have approximately 100 beds there, we will be able to satisfy the demand that we currently have,” he stated

A new hospital at Bartica will be completed in 2028.

The existing district hospitals at Karasabai, Annai and Sand Creek, these have been updated and theatres have been added these facilitates visiting surgical teams.

The community of Kamarang has decided to allocate land for the construction of a new hospital there and the new hospital is in the design phase.

“So, you will have a series of new facilities that will come on stream between next year and in 2028, and these facilities will obviously improve the quality of care that we are delivering to the people in the interior of Guyana,” Dr Anthony said.

In addition to all of the new hospitals the government has constructed some 35 new health centres and health posts in the last three years.
