Residents are welcoming ongoing efforts by the government to address noise pollution, particularly in areas where excessive noise has been affecting communities, schools and other public spaces.

Resident of Georgetown Kendrick Williams said to the Department of Public Information(DPI) recently in a interview that there has been a noticeable reduction in noise levels, particularly along the seawall, following the installation of noise-monitoring equipment.

“I think the government has made a very smart initiative with dealing with that. I think the noise level has been somewhat minimized. We’ve seen the change,” he said to DPI.

Williams is also urging members of the public to take greater responsibility by reducing the volume of music when passing or gathering near sensitive areas such as schools and courts.

Meanwhile, another resident, Henry [only name given], said loud music from vehicles remains a concern in some communities, particularly at night.

He believes increased police presence and stronger enforcement could help to deter persons from breaching noise regulations.

Henry is also recommending fines and community service as additional measures for persons who repeatedly violate noise regulations.

His comments come as the government intensifies efforts to tackle noise nuisance across Guyana.

The administration is also moving to encourage nightclubs and bars to adopt noise-proofing measures, aimed at reducing the impact of amplified music on surrounding communities.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to balance entertainment activities with the rights of residents to a peaceful environment.
