Hundreds of rice farmers along the Essequibo Coast have welcomed the government’s cash grant initiative.

They described it as timely support that will help reduce production costs and strengthen their livelihoods.

On Saturday, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali spearheaded a cash grant distribution exercise to the farmers at the Anna Regina Town Council in Region Two.

For many farmers, like Bhagwandat Mangal, the grant represents practical assistance at a time when input costs remain a major concern.

He explained that the funds will allow him to purchase essential fertiliser for the next crop.

“It will help me purchase about 10 bags of fertiliser, which will make a significant difference in preparing my fields. I am grateful to President Ali and the government for this support, and I wish them continued success,” Mangal said.

Another farmer, Joyce Pittman, expressed appreciation for the assistance, noting that every contribution helps farmers continue investing in production.

“This grant will help me purchase fertiliser for my rice fields. I sincerely thank the government for this assistance and pray that God continues to bless the president for supporting farmers.’

For lifelong rice farmer Ibrahim Baksh, the grant reflects the government’s continued commitment to the industry.

“I have spent my entire life in rice farming, and I am thankful for this cash grant. The government has consistently supported farmers, including through fertiliser assistance, and I appreciate the continued investment in our sector,” Baksh stated.

Veteran farmer Loretta Durga, who has worked in the industry for more than three decades, said the support comes at an important time.

“I am very happy to receive this cash grant. It will go a long way in helping me manage my farming expenses, especially given the recent paddy prices. I thank President Ali for this important initiative,” Durga said.

More than 5,100 rice farmers cultivating over 235,000 acres of land across Guyana will benefit from the initiative. Region Two is among the major rice-producing regions.

The cash grant forms part of the government’s broader agenda to lower production costs, improve productivity and ensure the long-term sustainability of Guyana’s rice sector while delivering direct benefits to farming communities across the country.
