Unprecedented transformation in agriculture is being accelerated through major investments in production, agro-processing, drainage and irrigation infrastructure, and transportation in Region Two.

These build on existing initiatives to create new opportunities for farmers, fisherfolk, and agro-processors while strengthening food security and economic growth.

As part of efforts to expand agricultural production, about 10 acres of pineapple farm have been established at Mashabo.

These are alongside an experimental red peas cultivation plot to diversify crop production and introduce new commercial opportunities for farmers.

To further increase value-added production, new agro-processing facilities are being established at Cotton Field and Charity.

These facilities will enable farmers and agro-processors to convert fresh produce into higher-value products, reduce post-harvest losses and create additional income-generating opportunities within local communities.

Innovation is also being advanced through the introduction of a hydroponic agriculture project in Anna Regina. It provides a modern and climate-smart approach to food production while demonstrating new technologies that can improve yields and maximise land use.

Significant investments are also being made to improve the region’s drainage and irrigation network.

New interventions include the installation of the Andrew’s Pump and Cozier Pump, rehabilitation of the Capoey Sluice, dredging of the Pomeroon River mouth, continuation of the Five Acres farm bed and drainage programme, and the acquisition of a new $100 million amphibious excavator to strengthen drainage maintenance across farming communities.

These projects are expected to improve water management, reduce flooding, and increase agricultural resilience. It ensures farmers can cultivate their lands more efficiently throughout the year.

Efforts to improve market access for farmers are also advancing.

Minister of Aviation and Utilities, Deodat Indar, inspects one of the vessels

Meanwhile, Minister of Aviation and Utilities, Deodat Indar, recently inspected the construction of three wooden cargo vessels at Supenaam, which were promised by President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali to improve the transportation of agricultural produce from riverine and farming communities.

Each vessel will be outfitted with cargo-handling equipment for efficient loading and unloading of produce and supplies, a spacious hull for transporting agricultural commodities, modern navigation equipment and restroom facilities, significantly improving the movement of goods while reducing transportation challenges faced by farmers.
