At the invitation of His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, the Honourable Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, will undertake a State Visit to Guyana from November 19 to 21, 2024. This visit highlights the enduring and strong relations between India and Guyana, underscored by President Ali’s January 2023 visit to India, where he was honoured as the Chief Guest at the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas and received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will participate in summit-level bilateral talks with President Ali, focusing on deepening cooperation between the two nations. Additionally, he will co-chair the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit in Georgetown alongside President Ali and the Honourable Prime Minister of Grenada, Mr. Dickon Mitchell.
Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to address the National Assembly of the Parliament of Guyana. His agenda includes a special address to the Indian community and the Indian diaspora in Guyana. In a symbolic gesture, he will pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by laying a floral offering at the Gandhi statue in the Promenade Garden, Georgetown, which was erected in 1969 during the Mahatma Gandhi centenary celebrations.
The Prime Minister’s itinerary also includes a visit to the Indian Arrival Monument in the Monument Garden. This site commemorates the arrival of the first ship carrying Indian indentured labourers to the Caribbean, which landed on the shores of then-British Guiana in 1838. This part of the visit will honour the historical ties and the shared heritage between India and Guyana.
