Venezuela has been struck by one of its most devastating natural disasters in decades after two powerful earthquakes rattled the country within seconds of each other, causing widespread destruction, loss of life, and significant damage to infrastructure.

According to international reports, the earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck western Venezuela on June 24, with their epicentres located west of the capital, Caracas. The tremors were felt across large parts of the country, triggering panic among residents and forcing thousands to flee buildings as the ground shook violently.

Authorities have confirmed at least 32 deaths and more than 700 injuries, although officials warned that the toll is expected to rise as rescue teams continue searching through collapsed structures. Several neighbourhoods in Caracas and surrounding regions suffered extensive damage, with apartment buildings, businesses, and public facilities either partially or completely destroyed.

The Venezuelan government has declared a state of emergency and mobilised emergency responders, military personnel, and medical teams to assist affected communities. Search-and-rescue operations continued throughout the night as crews worked to locate survivors trapped beneath rubble.

Among the most heavily impacted areas was La Guaira state, where infrastructure damage forced the temporary closure of key transportation facilities, including the country’s main international airport. Reports also indicated disruptions to public transportation services and power supplies in several regions.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicated that the pair of earthquakes were among the strongest to affect Venezuela in more than a century. Experts have warned that numerous aftershocks are likely in the coming days, raising concerns about additional building collapses and further risks to residents in affected areas.

Messages of support have poured in from around the world, with several governments offering humanitarian assistance to aid relief and recovery efforts. Rescue operations remain ongoing as authorities assess the full extent of the disaster and work to restore essential services.

Officials have urged residents to remain alert, avoid damaged structures, and follow emergency instructions as Venezuela begins the difficult task of recovering from one of the most powerful seismic events in its modern history.
