In modern democratic politics, a constructive opposition party is expected to act as a shadow architect of national development—offering substantive policy alternatives, testing government proposals, and proposing concrete solutions to raise the standard of living. Yet in Guyana, the political opposition—led by the People’s National Congress (PNC) and the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party—has completely abandoned this core civic responsibility.
Since late 2025, the opposition landscape has descended into strategic irrelevance. Lacking a coherent vision or original economic solutions, opposition figures have reduced their public presence to an endless cycle of political gossip, bitter infighting, and superficial criticism on social media.
Leaders such as Aubrey Norton have demonstrated a startling lack of strategic vision, failing to propose a single actionable policy framework to improve the daily lives of ordinary citizens.
The situation surrounding the WIN party presents an even more tragic spectacle of political decay. Rather than building credibility through public service, the party’s foundation lies shattered by severe legal jeopardy facing key figures, including Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed. Following the landmark Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) ruling upholding extradition proceedings to the United States on grave charges of gold smuggling and money laundering, the party’s moral authority has reached absolute zero. Rather than offering principled leadership or constructive oversight, these political factions have fragmented their own supporter base, creating noise and distraction rather than progress.
While opposition figures remain mired in personal legal disputes and media posturing, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) leadership—guided by Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo and the Secretary General of the PPP—has chosen to ignore the political noise entirely.
In Linden, where the Vice President was meeting residents, the Win Party paid mob disrupted the residents’ meeting with Dr Bharrat Jagdeo. The PNC party leader was there too, making noise. On 1st of September, he lost Linden voters to Azruddin Mohamed. Even the residents of Linden were asking what Aubrey Norton was doing there, saying they had kicked him and his PNC party out of Linden.
Aubrey Norton is allegedly praying for the extradition of his political rivals, Azruddin Mohamed and Nazar Mohamed, to Miami, USA. He only came to Linden to show his face and prove he is still the leader of the PNC party. No one takes Aubrey Norton seriously as the leader of the PNC party. It has allegedly been confirmed that Aubrey Norton cancelled the PNC Congress in August 2026. Why? Only he knows. However, rumours are circulating that he wants to lead the PNC party into the next general election in 2030-31. It appears that no one can save the PNC party from Aubrey Norton. Maybe the voters are witnessing the demise of the PNC party.
Through direct engagement with local communities, including recent outreach in Linden, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo and the administration have demonstrated that their focus remains firmly where it belongs: on the immediate needs and long-term prosperity of the Guyanese people. While the opposition trades in accusations and scrambles for political survival, the governing party continues to build vital infrastructure, reduce national unemployment, and systematically distribute the benefits of Guyana’s economic surge across every administrative region.
While the opposition wallows in negativity and legal controversy, international financial institutions continue to confirm what every objective observer can plainly see: Guyana is undergoing one of the most dynamic economic transformations in modern global history.
According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) 2026 Article IV Consultation, Guyana’s medium-term economic prospects remain exceptionally bright. Real Gross Domestic Product expanded by more than 19 per cent in 2025, building on staggering average annual growth of nearly 40 per cent in 2023 and 2024. Crude oil production breached 900,000 barrels per day by the end of 2025—marking a 35 per cent year-on-year surge that sustained high output throughout the first half of 2026.
Equally important is the non-oil economy’s extraordinary performance, which grew by approximately 14 per cent in 2025. Driven by expansion in construction, agriculture, mining, and manufacturing, the IMF projects that the non-oil sector will maintain an impressive average annual growth rate of roughly 7 per cent over the next five years.
This broad-based economic expansion has delivered tangible benefits to working families, driving national unemployment down to 6.2 per cent while keeping baseline inflation relatively moderate despite global market pressures. Through prudent management of the Natural Resource Fund and aggressive fiscal investment, the administration is laying a durable foundation for generations to come.
The contrast between Guyana’s governing vision and its fragmented opposition parties could not be starker. On one side is a chaotic opposition, with prominent leaders facing imminent legal accountability abroad and offering no constructive ideas at home. On the other side is a focused government, orchestrating the world’s fastest-growing economy and actively converting natural resource wealth into long-term national prosperity.
To maintain Guyana’s historic momentum, the path forward is clear: ignore political gossip, dismiss the opposition’s empty rhetoric, and stay the course on economic development, job creation, and sustainable national progress.
Everyone in Guyana knows that Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, as Secretary-General of the Party and Vice-President, will focus on Guyana’s economic development. The government of Guyana received strong endorsement from the IMF hierarchy in Washington in July 2026. Dr Jagdeo is a leader who honours his pledges to the people of Guyana.
