With more than 50 house lots already allocated in the new housing development in Mabaruma, Region One, beneficiaries can now identify and access their lands.

This is even as preparations continue to make the area ready for construction.

The government is also moving swiftly to transform the new housing development into a fully serviced community, with works to provide water and electricity set to begin in the coming weeks, bringing homeownership closer for dozens of families.

Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, with a family as they identify their land

Providing an update on the project, Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, said works will commence soon in the area for residents to access basic amenities.

“We have already awarded a contract for the drilling of a well to supply this area, and the contractor is currently mobilising. He’s expected to come in within two weeks,” the minister stated.

Minister Croal also announced that works to install electricity infrastructure are progressing through the procurement stage, with the installation of utility poles expected to begin within a month.

He said the response from allottees has been overwhelmingly positive, noting that many are excited to finally identify the land on which they will build their homes.

Between 2020 and 2026, Region One (Barima-Waini) saw a major push for sustainable housing, shifting away from coastal centralization.

The government prioritised both hinterland housing and township schemes to provide modern amenities and formal property ownership.

The continued rollout of housing infrastructure in Mabaruma reflects the government’s commitment to expanding access to affordable homeownership and ensuring that new housing schemes are supported by essential services, creating sustainable communities and improving the quality of life for families in hinterland regions.
