The government has welcomed the lifting of the ban on the MV Canawaima, following successful technical inspections and the vessel’s compliance with specific requirements set by the Maritime Authority of Suriname (MAS).
The Guyana-Suriname ferry service will resume operations on August 28, 2026, according to its regular schedule.
The immediate priority will be transporting passengers who were left stranded during the temporary suspension of the service.
The government said its representatives worked closely with their Surinamese counterparts over the past several days to address the required safety and structural measures and facilitate the vessel’s return to service at the earliest possible time.
The government acknowledged the considerable inconvenience caused to passengers and the public in both countries, noting that the safety and wellbeing of travellers remained the top priority throughout the process.
It also thanked the relevant authorities and stakeholders for their cooperation and support, while expressing appreciation to the public for their patience during the suspension.
Meanwhile, Guyana and Suriname will continue discussions regarding the subsequent dry-docking of the MV Canawaima and the provision of a replacement vessel, to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted ferry service between the two countries.
