Several CARICOM member states are expressing interest in integrating their electronic identification (e-ID) systems with Guyana’s, paving the way for seamless regional travel.
Minister of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation Zulfikar Ally made the announcement via social media on Saturday.
He noted that following his participation in the 51st Regular Meeting of the Conference of CARICOM Heads of Government in Saint Lucia alongside President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, many CARICOM members expressed interest in coming on board to integrate their e-ID cards with Guyana’s.
Guyana and Barbados have already taken the first major step towards seamless regional travel through an e-ID partnership that will allow citizens of both countries to travel using only their national electronic identification cards instead of passports.
He also encouraged Guyanese who are yet to register for their electronic identification cards to do so, highlighting the growing benefits of the national digital identification system.
“I hope to see those of you who have not yet gotten your e-ID cards, that you go out very soon and utilise the centres to get them done,” he urged.
The government’s vision is to expand similar arrangements with additional CARICOM member states, bringing the region closer to seamless movement of people through a modern, secure and interoperable digital identification system.
