Fifty-five households in Siriki Sands, a riverine community in the Pomeroon River, Region Two, now have improved access to water following the distribution of 55 water tanks to residents.
The initiative fulfils a commitment made by the Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, during a recent cabinet outreach in Region Two, where residents voiced their concerns about the challenges they faced in accessing and storing water.
According to Community Development Council (CDC) Chairperson Sophia Ramdeen, the community previously relied heavily on a well installed in the village for its water supply.
“The system was dependent on solar power, creating challenges during periods of cloudy weather; reduced sunlight affected the amount of power available to operate the system,” she explained to the Department of Public Information (DPI).
Now, with each household receiving its own tank, residents have a more reliable means of storing water.
This reduces their dependence on the community’s water system and provides an added level of resilience during periods when the well system is unable to meet demand.
Ramdeen stated that the residents have welcomed the delivery, expressing appreciation to Minister Mustapha, and by extension, the government for responding to their concerns.
“Thanks to the government, the residents in the community are now very happy about it and are currently installing the water tanks. I already set up mine,” she noted.
