Residents of Goed Fortuin in Region Three will soon see a major transformation of their environment as the village has been selected as one of the many pilot communities under the government’s Model Village initiative.

Residents of Goed Fortuin at the consultation

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali on Monday engaged residents at the Goed Fortuin Primary School, as part of ongoing consultations to shape the development of communities across Guyana through improved infrastructure, enhanced public spaces and better living conditions.

Under the proposed transformation plan, approximately 658 households in Goed Fortuin are expected to benefit from upgrades covering the community’s 103.5 acres of land.

The development plan includes improvements to more than 13,000 metres of drainage, upgrades to 77 roads.

They will also benefit from improved pedestrian access, street lighting, speed humps, beautification works, green spaces and recreational areas.

Residents will also benefit from measures to address roadside congestion, derelict vehicles and unregulated roadside activities, while ensuring businesses can continue operating in more organised spaces.

According to the president, the vision is to develop communities where “people can walk safely, children can feel safe in the environment, women are empowered, and communities enhance economic activity and support social development.”

The assessment has focused on roads, drainage, public spaces, utilities, recreation areas and other infrastructure needs.

The model communities will include reduced flooding and improved drainage, along with enhanced safety and security with the installation of streetlights and cameras.
