The government is moving closer to achieving universal secondary education in Guyana with significant progress on the construction of the $2.6 billion Hosororo Secondary School in Region One.

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali on Friday shared updated images highlighting the rapid advancement of the state-of-the-art facility, which is expected to become one of the most advanced educational institutions in Guyana and the wider Caribbean.

The school is designed to accommodate more than 500 students, including those currently attending the Hosororo Primary Top and the Wauna Primary Top, providing them with expanded access to quality secondary education closer to their communities.

The institution officially began a phased intake on January 20, 2026, welcoming its first cohort of students following the completion of the main teaching block.

When completed, the school will feature modern science laboratories, a dining hall, and specialised facilities for Science, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Information Technology, Home Economics and Industrial Technology, creating an environment that supports academic excellence and practical skills development.

To support students travelling from remote communities, the school will also include dormitories capable of accommodating approximately 350 students.

In addition, modern living quarters designed to house up to 30 teachers will strengthen the school’s capacity to attract and retain qualified educators in the hinterland.

The Hosororo Secondary School represents another major investment and reaffirms the government’s commitment to ensuring every child, regardless of geographic location, has access to quality education.
