Guyana’s 60th Independence Diamond Jubilee celebrations have delivered a remarkable boost to the country’s tourism and aviation sectors, with more than 56,000 passengers arriving in Guyana for the historic Homecoming festivities.

At the heart of this achievement was the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), which processed approximately 48,500 arriving passengers, underscoring its growing role as a major gateway to the Caribbean and South America. The figures represent a significant 16 per cent increase in arrivals compared with the corresponding period in 2025, highlighting the strong international interest in Guyana’s milestone 60th Independence celebrations.

The impressive growth was recorded despite ongoing challenges facing the global aviation industry, including rising operational costs, elevated fuel prices and capacity adjustments by several international airlines. In contrast, confidence in Guyana’s rapidly expanding economy and tourism market has remained strong, with international carriers increasing available seat capacity to Guyana by 6% in the first months of 2026.

Thousands of members of the Guyanese diaspora, overseas visitors and tourists travelled to the country to take part in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The Homecoming programme featured a series of major national events, including the National Flag-Raising Ceremony, the One Guyana Flag Concert, the Taste of Guyana Festival, and numerous cultural, entertainment and heritage activities that showcased the country’s diversity, achievements and national pride.

Minister of Public Works and Aviation, Deodat Indar, welcomed the strong passenger numbers, noting that they reflect the continued expansion and modernisation of Guyana’s aviation sector. He emphasised that the airport’s ability to handle the surge in travellers efficiently demonstrates the effectiveness of ongoing investments in infrastructure, technology and operational improvements.

According to the minister, growth in passenger traffic is closely linked to the broader economic transformation underway under President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s leadership. As Guyana continues to attract investment, business travel and tourism, the country is steadily positioning itself as an important regional transport and connectivity hub.

The successful management of increased passenger volumes was achieved through coordinated efforts among airport management, airlines, ground handling services, customs and immigration authorities, security personnel, and other key stakeholders. Strategic enhancements were implemented to ensure a seamless travel experience for visitors arriving for the celebrations.

These improvements included streamlined passenger processing systems, the deployment of advanced digital screening technologies, strengthened security operations and faster baggage handling. Together, these measures helped reduce congestion, improve efficiency and enhance the overall customer experience at the country’s premier international airport.

The record arrival numbers during the Diamond Jubilee Homecoming celebrations not only reflect the success of Guyana’s 60th Independence observances but also signal the country’s growing appeal as a destination for tourism, investment and international engagement. As Guyana continues its rapid development, the aviation sector remains a critical pillar of the nation’s economic growth and global connectivity.
