GPHC strengthens diagnostic care for patients

The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) continues to strengthen diagnostic healthcare through continued investment in advanced medical imaging, modern infrastructure and digital technology to improve how patients are diagnosed, treated and monitored in Guyana.

As Guyana’s national referral hospital, GPHC aims to provide advanced medical imaging services to patients across all 10 administrative regions.

It will involve constructing a dedicated centre to complement the planned introduction of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. This would improve access, efficiency and coordination of patient care.

This expansion of its diagnostic capacity reflects the government’s commitment to enhance access to quality healthcare for patients across the country who depend on the public healthcare system. The journey, however, reflects how far medical imaging in Guyana has come.

In the past, diagnostic imaging at the hospital was largely limited to X-Ray examinations, which meant some complex conditions required additional diagnostic support before doctors could arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

Recognising the need to expand this capacity, the foundation was laid for the development of these facilities along with the training of medical imaging professionals in Guyana.

The department is supported by a multidisciplinary team comprising radiologists, radiographers, ultrasound technologists, nurses and other support personnel

Through sustained government investments over the years, the landscape has changed considerably.

Today GPHC’s Medical Imaging Department offers a broad range of services, including X-ray imaging, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), mammography, fluoroscopy and interventional radiology.

Each technology provides healthcare professionals with different tools to understand what is happening inside the human body, supporting the diagnosis and management of conditions ranging from traumatic injuries and internal bleeding to strokes, tumours, neurological disorders and diseases affecting the brain, spine and joints.

For patients, this evolution could mean a healthcare system increasingly capable of providing answers closer to home and supporting doctors with the information they need to make critical decisions.

As GPHC continues to modernise its diagnostic services, the focus remains on bringing Guyana’s healthcare system closer to a future in which advanced medical technology and coordinated care provide patients with the timely, specialised services they need, regardless of which region they call home.
