The Government of Guyana will begin constructing homes for elderly and other vulnerable persons in coastal regions.

Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo announced the coastal housing initiative on Tuesday during a meeting with residents of Region 10 at the Watooka Guest House, saying the programme fulfils a commitment made in the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) manifesto.

“We are launching a programme now for people who are really destitute, like people who have been abandoned by their families, those who are extremely poor, those who are [differently abled] and can’t afford to build. The government will build some small one-bedroom houses for them,” Dr Jagdeo said.

The vice president explained that the initiative is intended to provide housing support for persons who are unable to build homes on their own because of their financial or personal circumstances.
