The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, has vigorously defended the government’s decision to make major bridges toll-free, emphasizing the significant benefits this initiative will bring to everyday citizens once implemented.
During the commissioning of the multi-million-dollar Schoonord to Crane Highway, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali announced that once the construction of the new Demerara River Crossing, the Berbice River Bridge, and the new Wismar-Mackenzie Bridge is completed, commuters will no longer have to pay a toll.
“It’s not monkeys that will cross the bridge. It’s our people. They would have big savings if they crossed the bridge. They would all benefit, including Norton, if he takes a trip across Region Three or goes across the bridge in Wismar,” Dr. Jagdeo remarked during a press conference on Thursday.
This major step is expected to ease travel and remove financial burdens for commuters.
The US$260 million Demerara River bridge is crucial to the government’s plan to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity between Regions Three and Four. Construction is set to be completed by the end of 2024.
Currently, tolls for bridge crossings range from $40 for motorcycles to $700 for motor lorries, while cars and minibuses pay $200.
In Region Ten, construction of the Wismar to Mackenzie bridge is underway. Once finished, commuters will also enjoy toll-free travel across this route. This project is expected to be completed by 2026.
Additionally, the government is negotiating to acquire the Berbice Bridge, and once the acquisition is finalized, the toll for this bridge will also be removed.
“Governments work for the people, and it’s a good initiative if they would afford it,” Dr. Jagdeo further emphasized.
He also dismissed claims that this was an autocratic move, stressing that full discussions had been held on the matter.
