The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government have endorsed Guyana’s nomination of Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett as the region’s candidate for the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.
In the communiqué issued following the 51st Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government recently held in Saint Lucia, regional leaders reaffirmed the community’s commitment to multilateralism.
The heads of government noted that the appointment of a new UN Secretary-General comes at a critical moment for the world.
The leaders strongly welcomed Guyana’s nomination of Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett and expressed their full endorsement of her candidacy.
President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali had previously announced that Guyana would nominate Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett for the UN’s highest diplomatic office, describing her as an accomplished diplomat with decades of experience in foreign affairs, governance and international relations.
Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett currently serves as Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and has held several senior positions, including Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Her diplomatic career has seen her represent Guyana on major international platforms while advancing the country’s foreign policy priorities.
If successful, Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett would become the first Caribbean national to serve as Secretary-General of the United Nations.
