Healthcare delivery in Guyana’s hinterland continues to evolve as investment in modern facilities brings essential services closer to communities and expands access to quality care.
In Campbelltown, Region Eight, residents are now benefiting from a newly commissioned health centre equipped to provide critical primary healthcare services within the community.
For Campbelltown Toshao Earle Gildarie, the facility has already begun making a meaningful difference, particularly by creating a more familiar healthcare environment for residents.

“Since the facility came on board, it has been benefiting our residents. We have our staff right here from the community who speak the local language, and the residents feel more comfortable coming and interacting and saying what is on their mind with their own,” toshao said.
The connection between healthcare workers and the community is being matched by investments in equipment to improve the quality and reliability of services.
Meanwhile, Nurse Marlana Martin says one of the important additions is a solar powered refrigerator that allows vaccines to be stored safely while maintaining the required temperatures.
“We have two temperature charts here, one for internal and one for external,” she noted.

The refrigerator stores a range of vaccines, including those for rotavirus, hepatitis B, BCG, yellow fever, polio, pentavalent vaccination and rabies, strengthening the centre’s capacity to support immunisation within the community.
The health centre also provides an important first point of care for residents, while patients requiring more advanced medical attention can be referred to the Mahdia District Hospital.
It is an approach centred not only on constructing facilities, but on ensuring that those facilities are appropriately equipped, staffed and responsive to the communities they serve.
The facility was commissioned in August by Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Pauline Sukhai, and Minister of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation, Zulfikar Ally.
