Bush Lot on the West Coast of Berbice in Region Five will be transformed into a more sustainable and people-centred community as part of the government’s Model Village Initiative proposed for several areas nationwide.

    President Irfaan Ali addresses residents

Addressing residents during a community consultation on Friday, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali disclosed that the initiative extends beyond infrastructure upgrades.

He emphasised that it will ensure every Guyanese enjoys the same standard of development and quality of life.

The investments will include roads, drainage, bridges, walkways, recreational spaces, lighting and utility infrastructure improvements while reducing sources of conflict through better community planning.

Places of worship may also serve as centres for community engagement and safe spaces for children, young people and the elderly.

The president explained that every region possesses unique economic strengths that can be developed through the initiative.

For Region Five, he pointed to agriculture and agro-processing, urging residents to move beyond primary production by using opportunities through the Guyana Development Bank to package, preserve and export local products such as peppers and seasonings.

“What we’re investing in is much more than infrastructure. It is about developing the strength and character of the community that will ensure a quality of life that is enjoyable by every single person,” the president underscored.

He also announced that residents will soon benefit from new community health testing centres, expanded services at the government service centre, and consultations on financing opportunities through the Guyana Development Bank for community-based projects.

“We want the community to be involved in the decision-making,” he said, adding that residents’ feedback will guide the implementation of projects designed to improve the overall quality of life in the village.
