For 192 children from nine care homes across Guyana, the start of the new school term came with an opportunity to pause, unwind and simply enjoy being children.

The children were treated to an evening at the movies under the Adopt-an-Orphanage Initiative of First Lady Arya Ali, providing them with an experience centred on recreation, social interaction and creating positive memories.

The initiative brought together children from Save R Kids, Joshua’s House, Bless The Children Home, St John’s Bosco, Ruimveldt Children’s Home, Shaheeds Boys, Shaheeds Girls, Hope Children’s Home and Prabhu Sharan.

With preparations for the new school term underway, the outing provided a welcome break from the demands of getting ready for the classroom, while giving the children an opportunity to laugh, socialise and share an experience outside of their usual environments.

Beyond the entertainment, initiatives of this nature can play an important role in supporting the overall development and wellbeing of children in residential care.

Opportunities for recreation and social engagement allow children to build relationships, develop a greater sense of belonging and participate in experiences that foster confidence and positive emotional development.

The outing also reinforces the importance of ensuring that children in care have access to opportunities similar to those enjoyed by their peers.

For the First Lady, the Adopt-an-Orphanage Initiative continues to provide a platform for direct engagement with children in care and support for their broader development, contributing to a sense of inclusion and normalcy, while reminding them that their wellbeing extends beyond their educational and material needs.
