Georgetown, Guyana –  Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister with Responsibility for Public Affairs and Information, Kwame McCoy, has urged Guyanese to strengthen national unity, tolerance and togetherness as the country celebrates Diwali, highlighting the importance of working collectively towards a shared future.

The minister made the appeal while addressing a Diwali gathering at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), where he reflected on the festival’s message of light overcoming darkness and good triumphing over evil.

    Togetherness Essential for National Development

Minister McCoy stressed that Guyana’s continued progress depends on citizens putting aside their differences and working together towards common national objectives.

He noted that the Government’s development initiatives across various sectors are aimed at ensuring that every citizen has equal opportunities to improve their lives, achieve success and contribute to the country’s advancement.

The minister emphasised that unity is essential to maintaining the momentum of Guyana’s development and ensuring that the benefits of progress reach all communities.

    Reject Prejudice and Division

Addressing the importance of social harmony, Minister McCoy encouraged citizens to reject prejudice, racism and division, while promoting understanding, respect and kindness.

He highlighted Guyana’s multicultural heritage, noting that the country’s diverse ethnicities, cultures and traditions are important sources of national strength.

According to the minister, embracing one another’s celebrations and traditions helps build stronger relationships and reinforces a shared sense of identity.

Diwali Message of Light, Hope and Kindness

Reflecting on the spiritual significance of Diwali, Minister McCoy encouraged Guyanese to become a source of light in the lives of others by replacing prejudice with understanding, division with unity and indifference with kindness.

He extended warm Diwali greetings to Hindu brothers and sisters and staff members of his ministry, wishing them peace, prosperity, happiness and renewed hope.

The minister concluded by reminding citizens that despite their differences, Guyana is strongest when its people stand together.

“Shubh Diwali, Happy Diwali,” he said.
