Guyana building integrated road network to strengthen regional connectivity – Min Edghill

As Guyana experiences rapid economic growth, the government is taking a more integrated approach to infrastructure development, with major road, bridge and port projects being designed to connect communities, economic centres and neighbouring countries.

Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, said the expanding network is intended to create continuous transport corridors across Guyana, linking developments on the coast with the country’s international gateways to Suriname and Brazil.

During a recent interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI), he pointed to the Palmyra to Moleson Creek four-lane highway as a critical component of this plan.

“Now the Palmyra to Moleson Creek road is to be linked to the bridge across the Corentyne River, which is to be built between Guyana and Suriname,” he said.

He added that the Palmyra area itself is being positioned as a major development hub, with several large-scale investments planned.

“There will be a massive Palmyra development, the second gas to energy pipeline, a stadium, a municipal airport, more than a thousand homes,” the minister said.

Additional plans for the area include a new hospital and deep-water harbour, while Palmyra is being considered as a possible location for an oil refinery.

These developments, he explained, will require stronger transportation links, including the proposed new four-lane Berbice River Bridge.

The project has already gone to tender and the government is now finalising the selection of a contractor.

Looking ahead, the anticipated movement of containerised cargo from a deep-water harbour will also require significant improvements to the West Coast Berbice corridor.

“If you are going to have a deep-water harbour at Palmyra, you got to move containerised traffic, which means the entire West Coast Berbice Road has to be upgraded,” he explained.

The government is currently examining the section between the Mahaica and Abary bridges, while upgrades will also be required along the corridor from Rosignol.

Those works will eventually connect with the four-lane East Coast Demerara corridor and, further west, the Ogle to Eccles highway.

The network is expected to continue from Eccles to Providence, then through Diamond, Land of Canaan and Soesdyke before reaching Timehri.

“So, we have a whole connection,” he said.

At Soesdyke, the network will connect with the upgraded Soesdyke-Linden Highway, providing another link to Linden and the new Wismar-Mackenzie Bridge.

From Linden, the corridor will connect with the Linden-Mabura Road and eventually continue towards Lethem.

Minister Edghill said negotiations have been completed for another 30 kilometres of road beyond the initial Linden-Mabura section.

He said this is while the proposed bridge across the Essequibo River at Kurupukari remains another important component of the route.

The long-term objective is to establish an improved overland connection through Lethem to the Takutu River Bridge, providing direct access to Brazil and the wider South American market.

“We have to get the Kurupukari Bridge in and continue that road all the way into the Takotu to cross the Takotu River, where there’s a bridge, into Brazil, into the South American market.

“So, it’s an integrated activity that is taking place,” he said.

The interconnected projects form part of the government’s broader strategy to develop a modern transportation network capable of supporting increased passenger and commercial traffic as Guyana’s economy and trade links expand.
