Georgetown, Guyana — Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister with Responsibility for Public Affairs and Information, Kwame McCoy, has called on Guyanese to reject deception, divisive behaviour and acts of revenge, while embracing truth, righteousness and unity.
The minister made the appeal on Monday evening as he joined devotees at the Sanskaar Bhaarati International Ashram Guyana in Diamond, East Bank Demerara, for the final night of Navratri.
McCoy said the Hindu festival offers an opportunity for spiritual renewal and reflection, encouraging people to apply the values of their faith in their homes, communities and wider society.
Navratri Encourages the Triumph of Good Over Evil
Minister McCoy highlighted the significance of Navratri’s spiritual teachings, noting that the festival encourages devotees to confront negative influences and promote positive values.
He urged citizens to apply these principles beyond religious observances by challenging deception, mischief and actions that threaten social harmony.
According to the minister, the lessons of Navratri can help individuals reflect on their responsibilities to their families, communities and the country.
He stressed that the values celebrated during the festival should influence everyday decisions and encourage people to act with honesty, respect and responsibility.
Call to Reject Division and Falsehood
McCoy cautioned against conduct that encourages division among Guyanese, emphasising the importance of protecting social cohesion and maintaining peaceful relationships.
He said citizens have a shared responsibility to challenge falsehoods and divisive actions, particularly when these threaten the well-being of communities and the country’s future.
The minister also underscored the importance of rejecting revenge and other negative responses to disagreements, encouraging people to approach challenges with reason and a sense of collective responsibility.
He noted that promoting truth and righteousness is essential to building stronger communities and supporting national progress.
Protecting Future Generations Through Shared Responsibility
The minister emphasised that the choices people make today can affect children and future generations.
He encouraged Guyanese to consider how their conduct influences the wider community and to ensure that their actions contribute to a more respectful and supportive society.
McCoy urged devotees to carry the lessons learned during Navratri into their daily lives, using their faith as a guide for responsible behaviour and positive community engagement.
Minister Extends Navratri Greetings
Congratulating devotees on completing the nine nights of observance, McCoy commended their commitment to faith, hope and spiritual renewal.
He encouraged them to continue practising the festival’s teachings throughout the year, strengthening family relationships, supporting their communities and contributing to national development.
The minister also extended Navratri greetings to devotees, encouraging Guyanese to embrace the festival’s message of good overcoming evil and to work together towards a society founded on truth, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
