The government is expanding electricity generation in Linden, Region Ten as rising residential, commercial and industrial activity increases demand for power in the mining town.
Thus, six one-megawatt generator sets, with a combined capacity of six megawatts, have been donated to the government by Bosai Minerals Group Guyana Inc and Guyana Manganese Inc.
The units and accessories will be transferred to the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) to strengthen electricity supply in Linden and communities along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.
Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips said the donation comes at a time when development in the region is driving greater demand for electricity.
“Your donation of the six megawatts will help in that growing development and supply of electricity [and meet] that growing demand for electricity in Linden,” he said.
The prime minister said the additional generation capacity will complement investments in renewable energy being undertaken in the region.
In addition, the Guyana Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Programme (GUYSOL) is expected to add 15 megawatts of generation capacity, supported by a new substation at Kuru Kururu.
Bosai is also developing a 10-megawatt solar farm in Region Ten.
Together, the solar projects are expected to add 25 megawatts of renewable energy capacity by the end of 2028.
Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar welcomed the donation, saying it will complement existing efforts to improve electricity supply in Linden and along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.
The agreement formalising the donation was signed by GPL’s Head of Executive Management Committee, Kesh Nandlall and George Zhao, representing Bosai Minerals Group Guyana Inc.
The PM said the growth in housing and business activity in Linden reflects the impact of government policies aimed at encouraging investment and economic development.
He also highlighted the importance of the sawmilling industry in the region, saying the sector provides employment and generates wider economic activity.
