Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d), the Honourable Mark Phillips, today said the Government is continuing to expand electricity generation to support Linden’s growing residential, commercial and industrial activity, as increased investment and development drive demand for power in Region Ten.
The Prime Minister made the remarks during a signing ceremony to formalise the donation of six one-megawatt generator sets, totalling six megawatts of generation capacity, along with accessories for the power plant, by Bosai Minerals Group Guyana Inc. and Guyana Manganese Inc. to the Government of Guyana through the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL).
The agreement was signed by Head of GPL’s Executive Management Committee, Mr Kesh Nandlall, and Mr George Zhao, representing Bosai Minerals Group Guyana Inc., and witnessed by Prime Minister Phillips; Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, the Honourable Deodat Indar; Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Her Excellency Yang Yang; and representatives of GPL, Bosai Minerals Group Guyana Inc. and Guyana Manganese Inc.
Prime Minister Phillips said the additional generation will strengthen electricity supply in Linden and support communities and businesses along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.
He pointed to the pace of development in Linden, noting that increased housing and business activity reflect the impact of policies pursued by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Government to stimulate investment and economic growth.
He also highlighted the contribution of the sawmilling sector to the economy of Linden and Region Ten, noting that the operations provide employment and generate wider economic activity in the community.
Prime Minister Phillips also acknowledged Bosai’s longstanding contribution to Guyana’s economy and development.
“Your donation of the six megawatts will help in that growing development and supply of electricity [and meet] that growing demand for electricity in Linden, and we appreciate this gift to the people of Guyana.”
He also highlighted ongoing investments in renewable energy aimed at strengthening electricity generation and supply in Linden. He said the Guyana Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Programme (GUYSOL) will add 15 megawatts of generation capacity, supported by a new substation at Kuru Kururu. Additionally, Bosai is developing a 10-megawatt solar farm in Region Ten. Together, these projects are expected to add 25 megawatts of renewable energy capacity by the end of 2028.
The Prime Minister noted that these investments, together with the additional six megawatts of generation, augur well for the continued development of Linden and Region Ten and form part of the Government’s wider efforts to strengthen and diversify the country’s electricity supply.
Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, the Honourable Deodat Indar, welcomed the donation and noted that the additional generation will complement ongoing interventions to strengthen electricity supply in Linden and along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.
Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Her Excellency Yang Yang, described the donation as timely, noting that it reflects Bosai’s corporate social responsibility and the continued friendship and cooperation between Guyana and China.
Head of GPL’s Executive Management Committee, Mr Kesh Nandlall, said the generator sets will be strategically positioned to support Linden, improve voltage levels along the highway and provide additional capacity to support expanding residential, commercial and industrial development.
Speaking on behalf of Bosai, Norman McLean said the company was pleased to contribute the generating units as Linden continues to expand. He noted that Bosai remains committed to supporting the development of the community and Guyana’s wider economy.
