– reaffirms partnership on health, education, flood mitigation
President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali met with World Bank Division Director for the Caribbean, Achim Fock, at State House on Wednesday, where the World Bank team reiterated its commitment to working with the government on several critical development areas.
According to a statement posted to his official social media page, President Ali said the engagement covered cooperation and partnerships in health, education, poverty reduction, housing, flood mitigation and food security.
Fock and his team are in Guyana as the World Bank’s Guyana and Suriname Representative, Diletta Doretti, comes to the end of her term.
Doretti has served in the role since April 2022, and during her tenure the Bank provided financing and technical assistance for coastal protection, drainage system rehabilitation, and flood risk management to safeguard vulnerable communities.
Today’s meeting builds on a long-standing partnership between Guyana and the World Bank. The Bank’s current Country Partnership Framework, approved in 2023 and running through 2026, guides a portfolio totaling US$312.87 million across six key areas including education, public health, natural resource management, transport, renewable energy and environmental resilience.
Guyana also became a Joint Client Representative office in July 2024, giving the country direct access to the full suite of World Bank Group financial tools, advisory services, and global expertise through an integrated approach spanning IBRD, IDA, IFC and MIGA.
In addition, the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) formally joined the Guyana-led Global Biodiversity Alliance via a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in April 2026.
Also, Guyana and the group signed a One Health Project agreement in August 2026 valued at approximately US$1.8 million. This was part of a broader US$22 million secured through the Pandemic Fund and World Bank support to strengthen the country’s disease surveillance and laboratory systems.
