A new well being drilled at Koko, Region One, is progressing smoothly.

It is expected to improve access to a more reliable water supply for approximately 500 residents once completed.

Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar, who visited the location on Wednesday along with Director General Alfonso De Armas, Member of Parliament James Bond, Regional Vice-Chairman Paul Pierre and a team from the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), inspected the ongoing works.

The area where the new well is being drilled

Minister Indar told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that the drilling process is progressing, with the well now being sleeved and fitted with filters to prevent sand and other impurities from entering the water supply.

The minister explained that once the drilling is completed, the well will undergo further work to remove impurities before its production capacity can be determined.

“They’re working on it. They were drilling yesterday. They had to sleeve it, and then they got to take out the impurities or whatever is inside the well, and then they start producing. They have to see how much water they get in to know if they will produce,” the minister explained.

He noted that the process must be completed before an assessment of how much water the well will produce.

The minister disclosed that similar works are also underway at Kaburi, along the four-mile Kwibana Road, as part of efforts to improve water access in the area.

He said residents will be updated as the works progress.

Following completion of the Koko well, the drilling equipment is expected to be mobilised to Parakeese, where another well will be drilled so residents get better access to water.
