Spain secured a dramatic place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Portugal in an intense Round of 16 clash. A stoppage-time goal from substitute Mikel Merino proved to be the difference, sending the European champions into the last eight and ending Portugal’s hopes of lifting the coveted trophy.

The match was evenly contested for much of the game, with both teams displaying disciplined defensive performances and creating limited clear-cut opportunities. Spain controlled possession and patiently searched for openings, while Portugal relied on quick counterattacks led by veteran captain Cristiano Ronaldo. Despite several attempts from both sides, neither goalkeeper was seriously troubled until the closing stages.

Spain’s persistence finally paid off in the 91st minute when Merino found space inside the penalty area and calmly slotted home the winning goal. The dramatic strike sparked celebrations among Spanish players and fans, while Portugal were left heartbroken after conceding so late in the contest.

Following the defeat, Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed that the tournament marked the end of his FIFA World Cup journey. Although the Portuguese legend has not yet announced whether he will retire from international football altogether, he acknowledged that this was his final appearance on football’s biggest stage. Ronaldo received a standing ovation from supporters as he left the field, bringing an emotional end to one of the greatest World Cup careers in history.

Spain’s victory highlights the team’s consistency throughout the tournament. Their organised defence, disciplined midfield, and clinical finishing have made them one of the favourites to challenge for the title. Head coach Luis de la Fuente praised his squad’s patience and determination, saying they never stopped believing despite the tense contest.

Spain will now face Belgium in the quarter-finals, with both teams entering the match in impressive form. Football fans around the world are eagerly anticipating what promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the tournament.
